Tips to prevent OVERPACKING

Updated: Dec 21, 2023

I've gone on a few trips this year already but our honeymoon is coming up in November and while I have LOTS of outfits I want to bring I don't want to overpack and risk not even wearing some of the clothing items I bring! so here are some tips to prevent over packing!

  • Plan out your outfits

    • Start with shoes and build outfits from there - since shoes are the bulkiest you want shoes that will match most of your outfits so you can bring 2 pairs instead of 5

    • Bring neutral clothes or pick a color scheme - I usually stick to either warm-toned or cool-toned clothes so I can mix and match and then my outfits usually match my shoes too.

Tips to prevent overpacking warm and cool tone shoes
  • 1 shirt for every day of your trip and 1 pair of bottoms for every 2 or 3 tops - Unless you are going somewhere hot and you will be sweating or getting dirty you can wear pants twice or even 3 times so you don't need to bring as many bottoms as you do tops.

  • Make a list

    • I made a list of everything I bought or received that I wanted to bring on my honeymoon that way when it came time for packing I didn't forget anything I wanted to bring. It made planning outfits much easier too!

  • Roll your clothes/put them in a gallon Ziplock bag

    • Packing cubes - I really didn't think I would love my packing cubes as much as I do! If you roll your clothes inside the packing cubes you can get DOUBLE the amount.

    • Compression packs - These are just like packing cubes but you just fill them and then zip them up, they do all the compressing for you!

    • Space bags that don't need a vacuum - these are great too if you need to pack A LOT of clothes in a super small space. Just be careful about the weight if you're checking a bag. You can also use gallon Ziplock bags to achieve the same result and this method is great for kids! Use a different Ziplock bag for each outfit then label it with the date to make dressing easier!

  • Wear more layers on the plane/during travel

    • I mentioned this in my favorite travel outfit post. Assuming you’re traveling to a different climate: If you wear your bulkiest clothes on the plane there, you'll have to change when you get off which you then have to have room in your suitcase for your bulkiest outfit. Just take off one or 2 layers and you have a climate-appropriate outfit

  • Use every space

    • Use the inside of shoes for sock and undies and roll up your belts inside your hat to help keep its shape!

    • Between the handlebars in the bottom of the suitcase is perfect for tank tops. Roll them long ways instead of short and they fit perfectly!

Hopefully, this helped you avoid overpacking for your next trip! If you have any tips leave them in the comments, I'd love to hear 'em!

Until next time!

xoxo
